Matthew Saunders is head of our global international arbitration practice

Matthew regularly handles some of the most complex international arbitration proceedings.

Matthew focuses on international arbitration relating to international projects and the energy and resources sectors, with a particular focus on investment treaty arbitration, gas pricing and gas supply disputes conducted under a mix of common and civil laws, with seats in London, Paris, Stockholm and Hong Kong. He acts as lead advocate in arbitrations and leads our group’s most significant disputes including recently acting for clients in oil and gas and finance sectors in arbitration proceedings under the UNCITRAL Rules; Paris-seated, English law ICC proceedings; and Hong Kong-seated UNCITRAL arbitration proceedings.

Matthew has experience of advising a broad range of clients including sovereign and federal governments, international energy businesses, multinational corporations and financial institutions. He is a member of the London Court of International Arbitration, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators. His practice covers both contract and investment treaty arbitration. He is vice chair of the City of London Law Society Arbitration Committee.

Matthew leads our group’s most significant disputes and acts as lead advocate at hearings including recently acting for: ACWA Power, HSBC, SEGAS, and NLNG.

Matthew's work in arbitration has been recognised by Chambers and Legal 500 which list him as a Leading Individual for International Arbitration and also for Public International Law. He is also recognised as a leading international arbitration practitioner in the Legal 500 International Arbitration Powerlist 2020 and Who's Who Arbitration.
